Scrapping a car is one of the faster ways to dispose of an old vehicle. The process is straightforward and, in most cases, can be completed in a day or two from the moment you start. Here is exactly what to expect at each stage.
Typical total time: 1 to 3 days from first quote to money in your account. In many cases, same-day or next-day collection is available, with payment arriving the same day or within one working day of collection.
Stage by stage: how long each step takes
Getting quotes
Enter your registration plate and postcode on a comparison site. Multiple quotes come back in seconds. You spend a couple of minutes reviewing them and choosing the best offer.
Booking collection
Once you accept a quote, you choose a collection date. Many dealers offer same-day or next-day collection, particularly in cities and larger towns. In rural areas or during busy periods, you may need to wait two to three days.
The collection itself
The dealer arrives with a flatbed truck. They inspect the car, confirm it matches the description, take the keys and any documentation, load the vehicle, and issue your Certificate of Destruction. The handover typically takes under 30 minutes.
Receiving payment
Payment is made by bank transfer under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. Most dealers transfer the money on the day of collection. Occasionally it arrives the following working day. If payment has not arrived within two working days, contact the dealer.
Notifying the DVLA
After collection you should tell the DVLA the car has been scrapped. This takes about five minutes online at GOV.UK. The ATF will also notify the DVLA separately, but confirming it yourself is good practice. See our guide: Notifying the DVLA when you scrap your car.
What can slow things down?
- Remote location. Dealers may have limited collection slots if you are far from their usual routes. You may need to wait an extra day or two for a flatbed in your area.
- Missing documentation. If you do not have your V5C, some dealers will need to verify ownership another way, which can take longer. See our guide: Scrapping a car without a V5C.
- Bank transfer processing. Faster Payments typically arrive within minutes, but some bank accounts (particularly older accounts or certain credit unions) may take up to one working day.
- Weekends and bank holidays. Collections may not be available on Sundays, and bank transfers sent late on a Friday may not clear until Monday.
Can I scrap a car on the same day?
Yes, in many cases. If you request a quote in the morning and you are in or near a city, same-day collection is often possible. Payment by Faster Payments can then arrive within hours of collection. It is one of the quicker ways to turn a car into cash.
How long does the road tax refund take?
Once the DVLA receives notification that your car has been scrapped, they will cancel any remaining road tax and issue a refund for full unused months. This typically takes two to four weeks to arrive by cheque or bank transfer. You do not need to apply separately — the refund is issued automatically once the DVLA processes the notification.
How long until the Certificate of Destruction is processed?
The Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is issued to you at the point of collection — you should receive it before the dealer drives away. It is a paper document. The DVLA updates its records within a few days of receiving the dealer's notification. If you check the DVLA's online vehicle enquiry service and the car still shows as registered to you after a week, contact the ATF to confirm they have sent the paperwork.
